Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in America, is a rapper and actress. Queen Latifah's career in the fields of music, film and television has resulted in her receiving an Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Jr. an officer in the police force. Her father and mother split at the time Latifah turned ten. Latifah was raised in the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah is an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and compassionate". Her cousin bestowed it on her at the age of eight. Latifah, 5-foot-10" tall power forward on her high school team was always tall. In a school production, she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah began beatboxing with the fresh rap ladies.
