Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson, a jazz musician and three-time Grammy Award winner was born in Ohio, Chillicothe on the 20th of February, 1937. She was married to Olden Wilson, an ironworker. had worked for a long time as housekeeper. Nancy was the eldest of six kids. The father of Nancy was a fan of music and loved to play records with his children at home. This was a major influence in her early years. At the age of 4years old, Nancy was aware her destiny was to be a performer. She was able to develop her talents through singing in the church choir. When she was 15, she won the talent show on T.V. and began appearing on the Skyline Melodies Tv Show while being in High School. When she was fifteen, she began her professional career at nightclubs. Nancy, then 17, completed high school and was enrolled at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for a year before quitting to sing. Her first recording was in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956 with whom she was on tour from 1956 until 1958. While in the group Nancy released her first record with Dot Records. Cannonball Aderley suggested that she relocate to New York so as to increase her chances of success. In 1959 she moved to The Big Town. In just a few months she had been singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club situated on Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company heard her sing and immediately took her on. The contract was signed signing her with Capitol records in 1960, and she debuted the following year, with a single. Guess Who You Saw Today. Capitol released five Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. Her first album was focused on R&B and then, with Adderley's influence, she embraced jazz. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in 1962 was instrumental to bring her to the forefront as well as her hit Tell Me the Truth was made available in the year 1963. She was offered a job at New York's Coconut Grove nightclub, America's premier club.
