Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson as an ironworker from Chillicothe on the 20th of February, 1937. Her mother, Lillian Ryan worked as housekeeper. Nancy Wilson was the only born child at the age of 6. Nancy's father was an avid music lover and played records with his children at home. This was a major influence upon her growing up. At the age of four, she knew she would like to become a musician. She began to develop her talent by singing in church choirs. At the age of 16, she began to appear regularly in Skyline Melodies. She was fifteen when she won the television talent show. In the nightclubs she started performing at the age of 15. Following her graduation from high school at the age of 17, Nancy was enrolled for a semester at the Ohio's Central State College now Central State University prior to leaving and becoming a professional performer. She made her first recording with the Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, which she sang with from 1956 to 1958. Nancy recorded her first album through Dot Records during the time she spent with this group. Cannonball Aderley suggested she relocate to New York so as to enhance her career. In 1959, Nancy moved into The Big Town. Within a couple of weeks, Adderley's manager was impressed by her voice and hired her. The contract was signed the label Capitol Records in the year 1960. she made her debut that year, with a single. Guess who saw today. Capitol published five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. With the help of Adderley's influence the singer-songwriter shifted her focus away to R&B towards jazz. Their 1962 collaboration Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley was instrumental in propelling her to fame as she released her biggest smash Tell Me the Truth in 1963. This brought her a gig at the New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America in the year following and she became a star.
